Recently, a court in Anhui Province's Xuancheng City convicted 24 individuals involved in a telecom network fraud case. The defendants had used online live streaming to sell fake jade and gemstones from Myanmar, defrauding victims of over 8.59 million yuan. The mastermind behind the scheme was sentenced to 12 years and three months in prison, with an additional fine of 100,000 yuan.
The fraud began when five individuals from Jiangxi Province traveled to Yunnan Province to set up a company called "Chenyan Jewelry" (also known as "Shuangtang Company"). They started selling jade and gemstones through live streaming on various platforms. In January 2020, they devised a plan to falsely advertise the sale of high-quality jade and gemstones at inflated prices.
To carry out their scheme, the defendants created elaborate stories about the origin of the gems and claimed that they were rare and valuable. They even hired actors from Myanmar who pretended to be the owners of these precious stones during live streams.
As for customer service representatives within Chenyan Jewelry, they would contact potential buyers via WeChat or phone calls using pre-set scripts designed by their bosses. These reps would persuade people into buying expensive or counterfeit jade products under false pretenses that each purchase could lead to further gains due either increased value ("cutting up") or decreased losses ("cutting down").
After successfully swindling money from victims between January 1st and May 12th last year - amounting to nearly nine million yuan - these criminals were caught by law enforcement agencies!
